How an Interim Manager approaches an assignment

Click to enlarge the diagram above
The four elements to any Interim Management assignment are Diagnose, Plan, Implement and Exit
- Identifying and agreeing the issues
- Determining how they are to be resolved
- Implementing the solution
- Making sure the solution has durability
The same underlying approach is relevant to both interim line management and interim programme management assignments and whilst the style of execution may differ in terms of structure and process, which is a function of an Interim Manager's background and experience, this will not affect achievement of the desired outcomes.
The first element is likely to be completed within the first few days and the planning element within days or the first few weeks depending on complexity and existing readiness. In practice the first three elements tend to be part of an iterative process with both issues diagnosis and planning being revisited as required during the course of the interim assignment, adjusting or rephrasing implementation where necessary. Exit is a critical element designed to ensure that succession and knowledge transfer issues are tested and resolved. In the assignment completion 'wrap-up' with the client, the Interim Manager should pass on his or her general observations and draw the client's attention to any related open issues they may have identified.
