Both are important.
Interim Management does not suit everyone and a successful permanent career is not necessarily a platform for a successful interim career. Something to bear in mind is that interim management is not a place where you get promoted, so a Finance Director with ambitions to be a Managing Director for example, is unlikely to realise them in the interim market. Buyers in the interim market are looking to make a low risk purchase. They are not making a judgment about someone’s ability to perform in a bigger role; they want to hire someone who already has the breadth and depth of experience and the comfort with scale they need to give the buyer the assurance of successful delivery.
It can be frustrating if you are trying to become an Interim Manager that the market only seems to want to hire experienced interims. For some this barrier to entry can seem quite high especially as there is a general reluctance amongst Interim Management Providers to give budding Interim Managers their first assignment. This re-inforces the need to build and maintain a strong personal network and it is no coincidence that the vast majority of Interim Managers win their first assignment through personal contacts who have direct knowledge and experience of the individual’s capabilities.
